2013年10月18日に、NASAは、月の周回軌道を回る探査機LADEE(Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer)に搭載されたLLCD(Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration)で、月面レーザー通信デモンストレーションを行い、月-地球間のデータ転送で622 Mbps、地球-月へのアップロードは20 Mbpsの通信速度を達成した。
