A group of European scientists is currently developing a 1 kW, ‘dot matrix’ ultrafast laser system under EU’s €4.7 million ‘MultiFlex’ project. Anti-fouling, ‘hydrophobic’ metal or plastic surfaces, engraved by this new laser technology, could soon replace the toxic varnishes used in ship coatings to stop algae or barnacles sticking to hulls – reducing maintenance costs, fuel bills and CO2 emissions.
